How to Search Chugach Family Court Records
Alaska uses a statewide online system called CourtView for public access to court records. You can search family court records from the Chugach Census Area through this portal at records.courts.alaska.gov. The system covers cases from roughly 1990 onward. You can search by party name or case number.
CourtView shows basic case information including party names, filing dates, case type, and docket entries. It does not always show sealed documents or exhibits. For older records, or for documents not shown online, you will need to contact the court directly. The Valdez court or the Palmer Superior Court can tell you what is available and how to request copies.
To search, you generally need at least one party's name or a case number. If you are looking for a divorce decree or custody order, the case type is "Domestic Relations." Once you find the case, you can request copies from the clerk's office. Plain copies cost $5 for the first page and $3 for each additional page. Certified copies are $10 for the first page and $3 for each additional page.
Note: Some records related to minor children may have access restrictions. Contact the court if you are unsure about a specific file.

Family Court Records in the Chugach Area
Family court records cover a wide range of case types in Alaska. Divorce filings are made under Alaska Statutes Title 25, specifically AS 25.24 for divorce proceedings. Custody matters are governed by AS 25.20, which sets out the factors a court considers when deciding what arrangement serves the best interest of the child. Child support is calculated under Alaska Civil Rule 90.3 and enforced through the Child Support Services Division, reachable toll-free at 1-800-478-3300.
Alaska is a no-fault divorce state. The accepted ground is "incompatibility of temperament," meaning the court does not require proof of fault. Either spouse can file. When a domestic relations case is opened, Standing Orders take effect automatically. These orders cover things like not removing children from the state and not disposing of marital assets during the proceedings. All of these rules apply to cases filed for residents of the Chugach Census Area, just as they do statewide.
If domestic violence is part of the situation, protective orders can be filed at the Valdez District Court. The court handles emergency and long-term protective orders under AS 25.35. Violations are taken seriously and can result in criminal charges.
Note: Domestic relations cases at the Superior Court level may be filed in Anchorage or Palmer depending on the circumstances and the preference of the parties or the court.

The Family Law Self-Help Center serves people who are handling their own cases without an attorney. You can reach them at (907) 264-0851 in Anchorage, or toll-free at (866) 279-0851. They can answer general questions about procedures and forms, but they cannot give legal advice. For legal advice, you would need to speak with an attorney.
Electronic filing is available through TrueFiling for certain case types. Check the Alaska Court System website at courts.alaska.gov for current information on which case types accept electronic filing and how to register.
